8 March 2024. Today, the world celebrates women—their achievements, their challenges, their vision, and their crucial role in societies. This year, amidst conflicts, climate change, and polarizing societies undermining decades of progress in gender equality, International Women’s Day calls for “Investing in Women: Accelerating Progress” to achieve gender equality.
Today, PRIMA seizes the opportune moment to unveil its latest initiative, funded by the EU: the “Woman Greening Food Systems in the Mediterranean” award, underscoring the indispensable role of women in cultivating sustainable food systems.
This new initiative aims at recognizing and celebrating the actions of women in advancing sustainable and resilient food systems. The newly introduced “PRIMA Woman Greening Food Systems Award in the Mediterranean Region” seeks to recognize the contributions of women who have been at the forefront of driving positive change within the food and agriculture sector across the Mediterranean.

This new award will shine a spotlight on two women who have demonstrated leadership, innovation, and impact in promoting sustainability and resilience in food systems throughout the Mediterranean Region.
With a cash prize of €10,000 for each of the two winners, the award aims to not only acknowledge their accomplishments but also to provide them with a platform to share their experiences and insights with a wider audience.

Applications for the award are open to all legal entities or groups of legal entities led by women, operating within the Mediterranean Region. Participants are encouraged to showcase their initiatives and projects that have led to tangible improvements in the sustainability and resilience of food systems. Joint applications from multiple participants are also welcome, provided they appoint a lead participant to represent them.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must fulfil certain criteria, including being established within a PRIMA Participating State and implementing practices within the Mediterranean Region. Additionally, individuals affiliated with PRIMA or serving on its advisory or governing boards are not eligible for the award.
Applicants must demonstrate innovative solutions for greening food systems, evidence of impactful implementation, and women empowerment within the Mediterranean region, with a focus on environmental sustainability, measurable improvements in sustainability metrics, and inclusive participation in decision-making and project implementation led by women.

The “Woman Greening Food Systems Award” serves as a testament to the invaluable contributions of women in shaping a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable future for all.
This award is in alignment with the European Commission’s commitment to promoting gender equality in research and innovation as outlined in the European Commission’s Gender Equality Strategy for 2020-2025.
The Award aligns with the objectives of the “Towards 2030: Agenda for a Greener Med – Contributing to Achieving the Environmental SDGs in the Mediterranean” or 2030GreenerMed, which seeks to establish the post-2020 UfM Environment Agenda. This initiative aims to promote collaboration across borders and sectors to tackle significant environmental challenges in the Mediterranean region, thereby advancing the attainment of the Environmental SDGs.
The award aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
The 2024 Award is an initiative funded by the EU and led by PRIMA.
