With a combination of biological and process engineering expertise, the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB develops processes, technologies and products for health, sustainable chemistry, the environment and climate protection. Founded in 1953, the research institute is part of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. and today has around 350 employees and an operating budget of €35.7 million. The Innovation Field for Water Technologies, Resource Recovery & Scale-Up has decades of experience in the development of innovative processes for water sanitization, water reuse and the automation of environmental technology systems. Current research focuses on the development of processes and products for the industrial bioeconomy and recycling-oriented water management. The IGB is actively involved in projects that focus on waste and wastewater reuse.
- Topic 1.1.1-2024 (IA) Sustainability of Mediterranean irrigated agriculture through the implementation of WEFE Nexus approach.
- Topic 1.2.1-2024 (IA) Transformative Adaptation of Mediterranean dry farming systems using water harvesting techniques to address extreme drought in arid and semi-arid environments.

We have been working on national and international projects that focus on the topics of water and wastewater reuse technologies specifically for crop cultivation. Recent Projects include but are not limited to the following:
Project Hypowave: https://www.igb.fraunhofer.de/en/reference-projects/hypowave.html
Project Hypowave+: https://www.igb.fraunhofer.de/en/reference-projects/hypowave-plus.html
Project NexusHub: https://www.igb.fraunhofer.de/en/reference-projects/nexushub.html
Project GreenUpSahara: https://www.igb.fraunhofer.de/en/reference-projects/greenup-sahara.htmlWe can bring the following expertises to the table:
1. Water Management: Technologies and Innovation in terms of effectively managing water sources and bodies.
2. Wastewater Management/Reuse: Technologies and Innovation in terms of effectively managing wastewater sources. This includes technologies to reuse wastewater as well as recover nutrients from wastewater as well as solid waste. Different pilot plant solutions are available.
3. Hydroponics and Bioponics: We have experience in hydroponic crop cultivation as well as the biological and chemical nutrient recovery for hydroponic systems. We additionally own pilot plants to test certain research questions.
4. Water Disinfection Technologies: We have experience in different disinfection procedures such as advanced oxidation processes (AOP) and in-situ hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. Additionally, we have expertise in photochemical surfaces.
5. Risk Assessment: As part of the reuse potentials of water and wastewater we have expertise in the chemical and microbiological risk assessment for the reuse potential of certain streams. We are keen to participate in a project whose goal is innovative research in techniques to address extreme drought in arid and semi-arid environments.
