The Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) is a regional research and development center based at the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences of the American University of Beirut since 2001. ESDU focuses on promoting sustainable rural livelihoods across Lebanon, with a particular emphasis on smallholder farmers, women, and youth. They utilize participatory development methods, knowledge sharing, appropriate technologies, and impact analysis to achieve their goals. In 2013, ESDU established the Food Heritage Foundation (FHF) to preserve Lebanon's traditional food heritage. ESDU champions a multidisciplinary and participatory approach to community development and capacity building, aiming to empower marginalized rural communities through research, education, training, and outreach programs. Their vision is to create a network of self-generative eco-communities by integrating climate-smart agriculture, circular economy principles, and local food systems.
