The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) is one of the largest research centers in Greece with well-organized facilities, highly qualified personnel and a reputation as a top-level research institution worldwide. FORTH comprises ten Research Institutes one of each located in Patras, the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences (FORTH/ICE-HT). The mission of the Institute is to conduct forefront scientific research, contribute to technological innovation, provide training and advanced education to new researchers, and contribute to the development of the Region of Western Greece, in particular, and the country as a whole. The Institute covers a broad range of disciplines within chemical engineering sciences: (i) nanotechnology & advanced materials, (ii) energy & environment, (iii) biosciences & biotechnology.
Goal of the Laboratory of Cold Plasma and Advanced Techniques for Improving Environmental Systems (PlaNET) is to conduct plasma-based research with application to environmental and agri-food issues (e.g. water/soil/waste treatment, food/food packaging sterilization). These areas span from the study of plasma physics and chemistry to the construction of plasma reactors, both in laboratory and pilot-scale.
In particular, the research activities of PlaNET are oriented but not limited to the following areas: (i) Soil/waste remediation, (ii) Wastewater treatment, (iii) Characterization of plasma-activated water and (iv) Adsorbent activation/regeneration for wastewater treatment. PlaNET sees itself as a bridge builder from basic research to large-scale implementation and application in industry. PlaNET is very well equipped for all the carried-out activities. - Topic 1.1.1-2024 (IA) Sustainability of Mediterranean irrigated agriculture through the implementation of WEFE Nexus approach.
- Topic 1.3.1-2024 (IA) – Developing cost-effective and sustainable technologies adapted to Mediterranean Food Systems to decrease food loss and waste.

The PlaNET laboratory offers its expertise in the following areas:
Thematic area 1:
- Development and construction of cold atmospheric plasma reactors offering a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment, minimizing the environmental impact. Cold plasma, efficiently eliminates harmful pollutants and pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, from wastewater, ensuring safer irrigation practices. Moreover, plasma-activated water holds promise for crop enhancement, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional agricultural practices. Through plasma treatment, water gains reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that stimulate plant growth and enhance nutrient uptake. This technology boosts crop resilience to environmental stressors and pathogens, potentially increasing yields and quality. Plasma-activated water application requires minimal resources and can be easily integrated into existing farming practices. Its eco-friendly nature aligns with modern agricultural demands for efficient, environmentally conscious solutions.Thematic area 3:
- Development and construction of cold atmospheric plasma reactors as a totally green and low-cost solution, adoptable by smallholders, for food preservation and food packaging sterilization. Cold plasma extends the shelf life of food products, reducing waste and enhancing food safety. Its adaptability to regional conditions ensures its suitability for diverse agricultural settings. Ultimately, integrating such innovative solutions empowers small-scale farmers and promotes sustainable practices in food production and distribution, crucial for ensuring food security in the Mediterranean region. -
