DLR's identity is that of a research institution focused on scientific excellence. It also acts as a capable administrative organisation that strengthens Germany as a location for knowledge and innovation. DLR’s activities focus on its role within society and its responsibility towards clients, business partners, affiliates and employees, as well as on sustainable action. It is within this context that DLR contributes to solving societal issues.
The Institute for Solar Research is concerned with the use of solar energy on Earth. Our research focuses on concentrating solar thermal systems for the generation of electricity, heat and fuels, on solar energy meteorology, methods for optimising the operation of solar thermal power plants and photovoltaic systems, as well as the energy evaluation of buildings. The Institute for Solar Research sees itself as a bridge builder from basic research to large-scale implementation and application in industry
- Topic 1.1.1-2024 (IA) Sustainability of Mediterranean irrigated agriculture through the implementation of WEFE Nexus approach.
- Topic 1.2.1-2024 (IA) Transformative Adaptation of Mediterranean dry farming systems using water harvesting techniques to address extreme drought in arid and semi-arid environments.
- Topic 1.3.1-2024 (IA) – Developing cost-effective and sustainable technologies adapted to Mediterranean Food Systems to decrease food loss and waste.

The Agrivoltaics team of the DLR - Institute of Solar Research offers its expertise in the following areas:
- Simulation, design and development of Agrivoltaics systems, which can help improve the land use efficiency by combining agriculture and photovoltaic energy within the same area.
- Development of engineering solutions for water distribution below solar PV panels. These solutions can contribute to an increase in the water use efficiency.
- Development of innovative solar radiation monitoring solutions.
- Analysis of meteorological databases to optimize e.g. irrigation management practices.
