The Institute for Solar Research is concerned with the use of solar energy on Earth. Our research focuses on concentrating solar thermal systems for the generation of electricity, heat and fuels, on solar energy meteorology, methods for optimising the operation of solar thermal power plants and photovoltaic systems, as well as the energy evaluation of buildings.
The Institute for Solar Research sees itself as a bridge builder from basic research to large-scale implementation and application in industry. We therefore work closely with industrial companies on many projects.
- Topic 1.1.1-2024 (IA) Sustainability of Mediterranean irrigated agriculture through the implementation of WEFE Nexus approach.
- Topic 1.2.1-2024 (IA) Transformative Adaptation of Mediterranean dry farming systems using water harvesting techniques to address extreme drought in arid and semi-arid environments.
- Topic 1.3.1-2024 (IA) – Developing cost-effective and sustainable technologies adapted to Mediterranean Food Systems to decrease food loss and waste.

The agrivoltaics team at DLR offers its expertise in the design, development and optimization of agrivoltaics installations to participate in a consortium for the upcoming PRIMA calls. In addition to the deployment of a sustainable energy technology, such as photovoltaics, which contributes to the reduction of the carbon footprint; agrivoltaics systems contribute to a reduction in the water requirement for irrigation. Also, with a proper design, this kind of systems can be combined with water collection approaches, thus maximizing the availability of natural resources and reducing the loss and waste.
