The National Renewable Energy Centre of Spain (CENER) (www.cener.com)develops applied research in renewable energies and provides technological support to companies and energy institutions in five areas: wind, solar thermal and photovoltaic solar energy, biomass, energy transition in cities, and grid integration, electrical storage and hydrogen. CENER is a technology centre with worldwide recognised prestige, activity and experience.

The Grid Integration, Energy Storage and Hydrogen Department has about 20 years’ experience in grid integration research, demonstrated in projects such as LIFE FACTORY MICROGRID, OSMOSE, STARDUST or STORY.
Its main activities are electromagnetic transients’ analysis (in particular voltage dips, with simulations using specific software), distributed Generation and smart Grids (electrical and thermal, including microgrid design; control design and optimization; implementation, simulation models development and storage systems integration) and power flow analysis and dynamic response of the electrical system using dedicated software (PSS/E, DigSilent...).
Furthermore, the Department has developed a proprietary Energy Management System (EMS) based on a configurable HMI for multitechnological Power Plants and Microgrids, that integrates industrial communication protocols, advanced Smart Strategies for power plant, energy optimization including optimal storage management, energy market and weather forecast, power plants elements control and other control systems (i.e. SCADA). So, it has a strong expertise in developing EMS systems.
CENER offers its experience in EMS development for enhancing the energy effectiveness of new irrigation systems incorporating conventional and/or renewable sources of energy (PV, solar) together with storage solutions (hydropower energy storage, second lie batteries, etc). This EMS will be able to integrate all elements and define smart strategies to reduce the dependence of power grid, then promoting the application of such irrigation systems in remote zones. Moreover, proposed EMS would be developed with Open-source tools, then facilitating its implementation by small farmers. CENER contribution would involve also training of small farmers about the EMS use and maintenance. -
