KSÜ University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Horticulture is located in Kahramanmaraş province in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
The Horticulture department is composed of fruit science, vegetable science, viticulture, plant breeding, postharvest physiology and ornamental crops.
However, research activities have been carried out for breeding purposes in walnut and sumac species within the department for many years.
To date, many research projects have been carried out within the framework of university-Tübitak cooperation and new varieties have been bred.
As a result of these breeding (selection and hybridization breeding methods) studies, 26 walnut varieties with high yield and quality were patented.
Our growing/production and breeding studies on sumac (Rhus coriaria) species continue. As a result of the breeding studies, the breeding/patent stage has been reached for 2 sumac genotypes.
In addition, regular training on agricultural practices was organized for farmers and public and private sector representatives within the unit.
Our research team has conducted studies related to walnut, sumac breeding and production under Mediterranean climatic conditions in Türkiye for many years.
