The State General Laboratory (SGL) is a centre for the official control, monitoring, research and consultation utilised by the various state services, with national and European recognition. It is the Official Government Laboratory for chemical, biological, microbiological and toxicological control and is the national monitoring centre for foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, other consumer products . In cooperation with the competent authorities, it actively participates in planning and implementation of control, monitoring and research programs. It has a well-established expertise, scientific excellence and state-of-the-art infrastructure and undertakes research primarily aiming to investigate problems and emerging threats as well as to support the development and implementation of policies in the fields of Public Health, Food Safety, Authenticity/ Geographical Origin of Products, Risk Assessment etc. Analytical methods at SGL are performed with the use of state of the art equipment.
SGL contributes to the improvement of Quality of life through the provision of reliable and high quality services, constant development and excellence. Its mission is the provision of high quality services to the authorities and the citizens through innovative managerial and technological solutions with the ultimate aims to the public health and the environment protection focused on the prevention, the protection of citizen security and consumer rights which is based on the scientific support by the state authorities and European Union Committees.
