CREA is an Italian research organization dedicated to the agri-food supply chains. It operates as a legal entity under public law, and is supervised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests (Masaf). Scientific activity covers agricultural crops, livestock, fishery, forestry, agro-industry, food science and socio-economics. The commitment deals with the great challenges of the twenty-first century related to food production sustainability, following the principles of the circular, bio-based economy through a multidisciplinary approach that includes innovation transfer.
The expertise ranges from genetics and physiology to mechanics and robotics; from innovative techniques for the management of sustainable productions, including practices to improve soil fertility and plant protection, to silviculture, under natural and cultivated ecosystems, and livestock farming; from agro-food industry processes to the nutritional properties of foods and dietary aspects. Finally, consumer protection and education as well as waste reduction are also a top priority.
In CREA, 12 research centers (6 related to specific supply chains and 6 dedicated to horizontal topics) are present, forming a capillary network of structures throughout the country.
CREA-CI mission deals with cereal and industrial crop supply chains for food, feed and non-food applications, using a multidisciplinary approach. Focus is kept on biodiversity preservation, exploitation and its valorization into suitable pasta, bread and bakery cereal foods chain and into recovering bioactive substances by food waste for the development of new cereal-based products rich in nutraceuticals.
CREA-IT carries out activities in the field of biosystems engineering, agroindustrial and food processing, especially of fruit and vegetables, cereals and olives, for the sustainable management of the agro-ecosystems, agricultural, agro-food and agro-industrial sectors. - Topic 1.3.1-2024 (IA) – Developing cost-effective and sustainable technologies adapted to Mediterranean Food Systems to decrease food loss and waste. | Topic 2.3.1-2024 (RIA ) Leveraging urban and local food systems for sustainable food systems transformation
