In response to the pressing challenges posed by extreme drought in Mediterranean dry farming systems, innovative solutions are imperative. The motivation behind addressing this issue lies in the urgent need to safeguard agricultural productivity and livelihoods in arid and semi-arid environments.
My scientific experiences can help to the proposed solutions of the transformative adaptation of these farming systems through the implementation of water harvesting techniques. These techniques offer a promising avenue to effectively combat water scarcity and mitigate the impacts of drought by harnessing and maximizing available water resources. Through their strategic application, water harvesting techniques demonstrate notable effectiveness in bolstering agricultural resilience, enhancing soil moisture retention, and sustaining crop yields in the face of increasingly unpredictable climate conditions. This solution underscores the critical importance of proactive measures to address extreme drought, offering hope for the long-term sustainability of Mediterranean dry farming systems.
