Lebanon and PRIMA: strengthening ties for future Mediterranean challenges

Brussels, 22/07/2024 – Lebanon has renewed its commitment to the PRIMA program in the 2025-2027 period, aiming to boost Mediterranean collaboration and innovation. This commitment was formalized today at an initialing ceremony with H.E. Fadi Hajali, Lebanon’s EU representative, and Ms. Nienke Buisman from the European Commission’s DG Research and Innovation.

Ms. Tamara el-Zein, Secretary General of CNRS Lebanon—the designated authority for the PRIMA program in Lebanon—also graced the ceremony, underscoring Lebanon’s active role in shaping innovative solutions for the region’s pressing issues. Despite economic and political challenges, Lebanon continues to actively engage with PRIMA, showcasing its dedication to innovative, collaborative solutions for regional issues.

The commitment ceremony was marked by the presence of  Cristina Russo, Director for Prosperity at the European Commission’s DG Research & Innovation, John Bell, Director for Healthy Planet at DG Research & Innovation, and Octavi Quintana, Director of PRIMA. They highly welcomed Lebanon’s engagement, acknowledging its pivotal role in advancing Mediterranean collaboration and innovation.

Strengthening Regional Collaboration

The PRIMA program’s success relies on the collective effort of its member countries and partners. Lebanon’s renewed commitment reflects the effectiveness of this collaborative model. As PRIMA moves forward, Lebanon’s ongoing participation is a testament to the program’s ability to drive innovation and tackle complex regional challenges through a unified approach.

With Lebanon and the other participating countries’ continued involvement, PRIMA is set to further its impact on the Mediterranean region.The program’s focus on integrated solutions promises to address the interconnected issues of water, energy, food, and ecosystems, paving the way for a more sustainable and collaborative future.
