Main Tasks of the National Water Research Center (NWRC)
The National Water Research Center (NWRC) is the research arm of Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. Its core tasks focus on advancing scientific knowledge, supporting policy-making, and ensuring sustainable water management at both national and regional levels.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct Applied Water Research
Carrying out multidisciplinary research in hydrology, hydraulics, irrigation, drainage, water quality, climate change, and coastal protection to address water-related challenges.
Support National Water Policy and Decision-Making
Providing scientific and technical advice to policymakers through evidence-based studies, models, and strategic research programs.
Develop and Manage Water Resources Efficiently
Proposing solutions for optimal use of available water resources, minimizing losses, and enhancing water availability for different sectors.
Monitoring and Data Collection
Operating extensive hydrological and water quality monitoring networks across Egypt to support planning and forecasting.
Hydrological Modeling and Forecasting
Conducting studies on Nile River flows, flood prediction, rainfall analysis, and groundwater assessment to support water planning and risk management.
Environmental Protection and Water Quality Control
Monitoring pollution, assessing environmental impacts, and developing strategies for sustainable water use and ecosystem protection.
Technical Problem Solving and Engineering Solutions
Addressing practical challenges related to irrigation systems, drainage networks, hydraulic structures, and sediment transport.
Capacity Building and Training
Organizing training programs, workshops, and knowledge transfer initiatives to enhance the skills of professionals in the water sector.
Supporting National Projects and Development Plans
Contributing to major water and agricultural development projects and evaluating their impacts on Egypt’s water resources.
Hydrological Data Collection and Analysis
Collecting and analyzing rainfall, river discharge, groundwater levels, and climate data to understand watershed behavior and hydrological trends.
Flood Forecasting and Early Warning Systems
Developing and operating flood forecasting models using real-time and historical data to predict flood events and issue early warnings for vulnerable areas.
Hydrological and Hydraulic Modeling
Applying advanced models (e.g., rainfall-runoff models, river routing models) to simulate watershed response, flood propagation, and water flow dynamics.
Watershed and Basin Management
Studying catchment characteristics (topography, soil, land use) to estimate runoff, infiltration, and storage, supporting integrated basin management.
Flood Risk Assessment and Mapping
Producing flood hazard maps, inundation maps, and risk assessments using GIS and remote sensing to identify high-risk zones.
Drought Monitoring and Assessment
Analyzing long-term hydrological and climatic data to detect drought conditions, assess severity, and support water allocation planning.
Design of Mitigation Measures
Proposing structural measures (dams, levees, retention basins) and non-structural measures (land-use planning, early warning systems) to reduce flood risks.
Climate Change Impact Assessment
Evaluating the effects of climate variability and climate change on water availability, flood frequency, and drought occurrence.
Decision Support and Policy Guidance
Providing technical recommendations to stakeholders and policymakers for sustainable water resources management and disaster risk reduction.
Integration with GIS and Remote Sensing
Utilizing GIS databases and satellite data for spatial analysis, flood modeling, and monitoring of hydrological processes
