Brussels, 23–24 June 2025 – As part of the European Research and Innovation Days 2025, the European Commission is hosting the high-level event “Research and Innovation for a Competitive Green Transition”, gathering policymakers, researchers, and innovators to discuss how research and innovation (R&I) are driving Europe’s sustainable transformation.
The event will feature plenary sessions, policy panels, and an exhibition of innovatives projects, each contributing concrete solutions to the green transition. Among the highlights of the exhibition is the participation of the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA), showcasing two flagship projects: Intel-IrriS and NEWFEED.
- Intel-IrriS offers low-cost, IoT-based irrigation solutions for smallholder farmers, enabling efficient water management tailored to specific crop and soil conditions. Through smart algorithms, it helps optimize water usage without compromising yield, addressing a pressing challenge in Mediterranean agriculture.
- NEWFEED introduces a circular economy model by transforming agri-food by-products—such as grape stems, orange peels, and olive cake—into sustainable animal feed. The project has developed a pilot-scale prototype, demonstrating the viability of this approach both economically and environmentally.
PRIMA and the Mediterranean in the Spotlight
In addition to its presence in the exhibition, PRIMA Chair Prof. Angelo Riccaboni will speak during the plenary session titled “Building Alliances through Science: Green and Blue Diplomacy for Global Challenges,” contributing to the discussion on how international cooperation and scientific partnerships can address cross-border environmental and societal issues.
Representatives from the PRIMA Secretariat will also be available on site to provide information about the programme, its funding opportunities, and ongoing collaborations.
A Platform for Policy and Innovation
The two-day conference, taking place at the Charlemagne building in Brussels, will open with the exhibition and an invite-only networking session on Monday, 23 June, followed by a full day of plenary discussions and thematic sessions on Tuesday, 24 June. The agenda will cover a range of topics including green and blue diplomacy, support for green startups, disinformation in sustainability, and the future of Europe’s competitive edge in the green economy.
This event offers a unique opportunity to explore how R&I contributes to Europe’s sustainable future—enhancing quality of life, supporting climate action, and strengthening economic competitiveness.
