CETIM – Expertise in Nature-Based Solutions and Environmental Impact Assessment
CETIM is a Spanish research and technology centre with solid experience in nature-based solutions (NbS) and established contacts across the Mediterranean area. As coordinator of the Horizon Europe project NICE (https://nice-nbs.eu/project), CETIM is exploring strategies for bioaugmentation and the application of NbS such as constructed wetlands, vertical gardens, green ditches, and rain gardens for water treatment and urban resilience.
The centre has proven capabilities in environmental, economic, and social impact assessment through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), including tailored methodologies developed under NICE. CETIM also supports the development and testing of NbS prototypes, integrating alternative substrates and biological processes.
Its expertise covers multiple applications:
Constructed wetlands and hydroponic systems for wastewater treatment and reuse in agriculture
Removal of emerging contaminants such as antibiotics and pesticides
Urban NbS for stormwater management, air quality improvement, and CO₂ capture
Aquifer recharge systems contributing to salinity control and climate mitigation
CETIM ensures alignment with EU regulatory frameworks, including requirements for tertiary water treatment.
