Determination of the Nutritional value and the anti-metabolic-syndrome properties of the Mediterranean diet, and the testing of the nutritional efficacy of Novel and alternative sources of Protein for food and feed
Joint research project and multi-collaboration as part of a PRIMA research project to determine the nutritional value and the anti-metabolic-syndrome-related properties of the Mediterranean diet and the development and testing of novel and alternative sources of protein for food and feed. We can help in testing the nutritional value and (or) the effect of the diet / specific dietary ingredients (fats, protein, amino acid, etc.) on bodyweight growth and composition, protein (specific amino acids) conversion, and assimilation, development of obesity, diabetes, CVD, hypercholesterolemia, arteriosclerosis, etc. all in animal models for human diseases and (or) for monogastric farm animals. I am the Head of a research group interested in Nutritional Physiology, i.e., the broader aspects of physiology, involving and integrating mechanisms and regulatory functions at all biological levels spanning from molecular, cellular, tissue, and organs to animal model and human physiology. Currently, my research group’s research aims are to understand better mechanisms underlying energy homeostasis (body weight regulation), protein assimilation, longevity, circadian physiology, and their mutual interaction. We use human subjects and animal models and methods ranging from molecular and analytical chemistry to whole-animal and human calorimetry and locomotor activity measurements, all to assess: 1. The usage of an insect-based protein-rich meal for food and feed. 2. The health benefits and organoleptic quality of dairy products made from sorted milk based on fatty acid composition. 3. The efficacy of biocomposites as novel food additives for treating obesity, atherosclerosis, and hyperlipidemia. 4. The role of the endogenous circadian rhythm period-length, i.e., its deviation from the environmental light-dark cycle, in the susceptibility to obesity. 5. The role of leptin ontogeny (leptin surge at neonatal age) in susceptibility to obesity.
