We are delighted to be able to participate in a consortium that makes it possible to put in value in real farms management models that generate added value for farmers, in particular with the following objectives:
• Enable access to markets, i.e. ensure access of local producers to distribution channels and markets, providing the general population with healthy and sustainable products.
• Increase the income of the farmers, also including other possible agricultural-linked income sources and ensure transparency and fair pricing structure along the value chain.
• Promote access to work of young farmers and women.
• Improve sustainable food production systems with efficient use of natural resources and with eco-friendly processes with low GHG emission.
DESCRIPTION OF YOUR ORGANISATION:
The Small Farmers Union (Unión de Pequeños Agricultores y Ganaderos - UPA), is an agricultural organization to represent the interests of all sector of farming in Spain. Currently, the Organization gives support to more than 80.000 farmers, lobbying and campaigning for improve conditions and incomes for them, through its reticular structure, with regional organizations along Spain.
Furthermore, the Organization represents the agricultural Spanish sector in Europe, through some UPA’s personal based in Brussels. UPA is member of the European Economic and Social Committee, the Committee of Professional Agricultural Organisations and the Economic and Social Council of Spain.
In the recent years, UPA has develop several projects of various kind, whose common aim has been offering practice information and knowledge to implement in farms, making them profitable, sustainable and resilient. Through these works, several publications have been to design to encourage the farmers to achieve more efficient farms. These measures offer knowledge about some challenges that the farmers are going to have face in a short, medium and long term, about agricultural practices by reducing of external inputs, climate change adaptation and mitigation, improve the agricultural practices to increase the soil’s fertility and organic matter, contribute to animal welfare, sustainable use of water…
In addition, UPA counts on a communication’s department, with a huge expertise about disseminating of project results. This department is supported about an extensive communication network based in regional organizations, which manage to bring the information to our target audience.
The Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area will devise new R&I approaches to improve water availability and sustainable agriculture production in a region heavily distressed by climate change, urbanisation and population growth
