The Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) at the American University of Beirut is a 25-year-old interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach unit working on sustainable resource management, climate resilience, and food systems transformation in Lebanon and the Mediterranean region. ESDU develops and implements applied solutions integrating circular economy principles, livelihoods, and nature-based approaches. The unit has extensive experience in sustainable agriculture, agroecology, AI solutions, livelihoods, and resource efficiency (with a focus on WEFE nexus solutions), working closely with municipalities, cooperatives, SMEs, farmers, policymakers, and international partners. In addition, ESDU’s leadership is actively engaged in national and international governance and advisory platforms. This includes representation in the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO and its Scientific Committee, advisory roles in the development of the National Agriculture Strategy led by the Ministry of Agriculture with FAO support, participation in higher-level national advisory committees, and membership in the Economic, Social, and Environmental Council. ESDU is also represented on the board of the Lebanese Agricultural Research Institute (LARI), further strengthening its role in bridging research, policy, and implementation. The unit has a strong track record in regional programs, including participation in PRIMA and Interreg NEXT MED fundings, and was awarded the PRIMA WEFE Nexus Award in 2023 in recognition of its innovative and impactful work.
