Laboratory of Aquaculture and Bioremediation (AQUABIOR)
University of Oran 1 Ahmed Ben Bella
Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences
Overview:
The Laboratory of Aquaculture and Bioremediation (AQUABIOR) is a specialized research unit located within the Department of Biotechnology at the University of Oran 1. Led by Professor Sidi-Mohammed El-Amine Abi-Ayad, the laboratory focuses on sustainable marine development and the biological treatment of environmental pollutants.
Core Research Pillars:
1. Aquaculture and Aquatic Science:
* Optimization of fish nutrition using sustainable and alternative feed sources.
* Monitoring the health and quality of fishery products in the Oran region.
* Studying marine and continental hydrobiology to preserve local biodiversity.
2. Bioremediation and Environmental Biotechnology:
* Hydrocarbon Degradation: Utilizing marine bacteria to clean up oil spills and industrial lubricants in seawater.
* Heavy Metal Removal: Researching bioaugmentation techniques to detoxify wastewater and sewage sludge.
* Microbial Metabolites: Exploring marine microorganisms for potential pharmaceutical and industrial applications.
Key Personnel and Location:
* Director: Prof. Sidi-Mohammed El-Amine Abi-Ayad.
* Location: IGMO Campus, Department of Biotechnology, University of Oran 1, Oran, Algeria.
* Key Researchers: Omar Khelil, Slimane Choubane, Soumia Nil, Schahrazede Lacheheb, among others.
Current Focus (2025–2026):
The laboratory is currently advancing projects related to the use of Bacillus subtilis in sewage composting and investigating the biosorption capacities of microorganisms found in the Oran harbor to combat heavy metal pollution.
