We would like to offer our expertise and express our interest in collaborating in the formation of a project consortium under PRIMA 2025 – Topic 2.2.1 “Upscaling Agroecology Practices at the Farm Level in the Mediterranean”, with a specific focus on animal production systems and pastoralism. Our proposal aims to support the agroecological transition of Mediterranean livestock farming by promoting: the resilience and sustainability of extensive and semi-extensive livestock systems; the integration of grazing practices with biodiversity and ecosystem services; efficient and sustainable management of forage resources and pastoral lands; approaches to improve animal welfare and reduce environmental impact; participatory design of solutions involving farmers and rural stakeholders. Our institution, CREA-ZA (Council for Agricultural Research and Economics – Research Centre for Animal Production and Aquaculture), has longstanding experience in research and innovation projects related to animal production, sustainable agriculture, and the valorisation of traditional agro-pastoral systems, particularly in marginal and rural areas. CREA-ZA has research facilities also in Southern Italy and operational capacity for animal trials, as well as collaboration networks with partners across Mediterranean countries.
