Partnership Request for Decentralised Water Solutions, Smart Irrigation, and WEFE Nexus Integration in Mediterranean Agriculture
The Water Management Research Institute (WMRI), established in 1975 under Egypt’s National Water Research Center (NWRC), is a leading governmental research institute specializing in irrigation management and sustainable agricultural water use. WMRI has played a key role in transforming irrigation practices in Egypt from conventional rotational systems to modern, demand-driven approaches. The institute contributed to major national initiatives such as the Irrigation Improvement Project (IIP), supporting continuous flow irrigation, improved water allocation, and participatory water management. WMRI operates a nationwide network of experimental research stations across diverse agro-ecological zones in Egypt, enabling applied research, field validation, and scaling of innovative solutions. WMRI bridges research and implementation by providing scientific, technical, and policy support to address water scarcity, climate variability, and sustainable agricultural development.

DESCRIPTION

WMRI is seeking collaboration with universities, research organizations, SMEs, and international partners working on decentralized water solutions, smart irrigation technologies, and integrated WEFE Nexus approaches. The institute is particularly interested in developing and testing decentralized brackish water desalination systems integrated with smart irrigation and digital monitoring tools. These solutions aim to provide locally treated water at the farm and community levels, enhancing water use efficiency and reducing dependency on centralized infrastructure. WMRI offers a unique advantage through its nationwide network of experimental research stations distributed across Egypt, which serve as real-scale pilot sites for implementing, testing, and validating innovative solutions under diverse agro-environmental conditions. In addition, WMRI is interested in contributing to digital traceability systems that link water use efficiency with agricultural production and food value chains, thereby supporting sustainability certification and informed decision-making. Within the WEFE Nexus framework, WMRI aims to support cross-sectoral integration between water, energy, food, and environment through applied research, stakeholder engagement, and policy-oriented solutions. WMRI can contribute to field experimentation, system validation, water quality assessment, irrigation optimization, modeling, decision-support systems, and capacity-building activities

REMARKS

WMRI has strong experience in applied research and international cooperation and is open to joining consortia as a technical and research partner. The institute provides access to field infrastructure, experimental stations, and pilot sites across Egypt, enabling real-scale demonstration and validation of innovative solutions within the WEFE Nexus framework.
