Associação Fraunhofer Portugal Research is a non-profit private association founded in 2008 with the mission of undertaking applied research of direct utility to private and public enterprises, as well as of wide benefit to society.
As one of its research centers, Fraunhofer Center for Advanced Water, Energy and Resource Management (FhP-AWAM), is dedicated to developing and implementing customer-focused technical solutions to address and close regional loops of water, energy, and resources. Our areas of expertise include: i) biological and chemical reactor systems, focusing on anaerobic digestion and a multifunctional gas processing unit for adsorption, catalytic reaction and membrane-permeation studies, ii) membrane technology for liquid filtration, gas separation and pervaporation and iii) water treatment and monitoring systems, including advanced oxidation processes and disinfection technologies, sensors and sensor systems.
We are interested in joining or co-developing a consortium under Thematic Area 1 – Water management in the NEXUS.
We bring expertise in water/wastewater treatment and monitoring (membranes, AOPs, disinfection, sensors), renewable energy integration (co-wind and PV systems), and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to support robust environmental evaluation. We do upscaling of treatment/management systems for water/wastewater/brackish water sources.
We also provide access to a living lab in Northern Portugal (Douro Valley), including municipalities, water utilities, and producers (wineries, olive oil, and others), enabling real-scale demonstration, co-creation, and validation.
We are particularly interested in circular water reuse solutions, addressing seasonal supply–demand mismatches and improving resource efficiency and emissions in agro-industrial contexts.
