INRAA (the National Institute of Agronomic Research of Algeria) is a key institution in the field of agronomic research and rural development in Algeria. It plays an essential role in improving agricultural yields, ensuring the sustainability of production systems, and adapting to climate challenges. INRAA contributes to the implementation of innovative projects aimed at strengthening food security and the resilience of agricultural sectors.
The research division ‘Saharan Agronomy’ is responsible for conducting studies and research work on the assessment of the genetic diversity of the date palm and the promotion of varietal development; the optimization of technical itineraries for date palm cultivation, vegetable crops, and fruit tree cultivation; as well as on irrigation water management and methods to combat sand encroachment in oases
transformation, vegetable, fruit, post‑harvest losses, Saharan region,
transforming perishable products , vegetables, and fruitsright where they grow, before they spoil.
This is the challenge and the opportunity of our proposed research project on topic 1.3.1‑2026 (IA): Sustainable on‑site transformation of perishable Mediterranean agri‑products, specifically tailored to the Saharan regions of Algeria.
We aim to turn local fragility into lasting value: reducing post‑harvest losses, empowering rural communities, and creating resilient short circuits from the Saharan field to the market.
