The Laboratory of Aquaculture and Bioremediation, commonly known by the acronym AquaBior.
This laboratory is affiliated with the University of Oran 1 Ahmed Ben Bella, within the Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences. It is directed by Professor Sidi-Mohammed El-Amine Abi-Ayad.
The main research focus of the laboratory:
– Aquaculture and Fish Farming
– Bioremediation
– Biotechnology
-Aquatic Biology and Ecology
Our laboratory members have expertise in Microbial biotechnology (bacteria, fungi, algea), aquaculture and marine biology, water and soil bioremediation, molecular biology , genomics and bioinformatics.
Our laboratory is equiped with analyticals devices such as Atomic Absorption Spectrometry SAA, HPLC and GC.
Actual research projects of our lab are focused on olive mill wastewater treatment and valorization in biofuel production and as plant elicitor.
Biotechnology, microbial, aquaculture, feed, agriculture
Our laboratory teams and members are very eager to join a motivated consortium working on one of the below topics. We strongly believe that our expertise and objectives align perfectly with these research subjects.
Why Topic 1.2.1 fits AQUABIOR:
AQUABIOR’s core expertise in microbial biotechnology and sustainable aquaculture directly aligns with this call’s focus on alternative animal feeds.
Specifically, AQUABIOR can contribute to:
-Development of microbial-based feed formulations using locally available biomass and agri-food waste
-Validation of alternative feeds in aquaculture demonstration sites (TRL 6–7), leveraging AQUABIOR’s existing pilot facilities
-Assessment of effects on aquatic animal health, welfare, and product quality
-Valorization of biological by-products into high-value feed inputs, supporting circular economy objectives
This positions AQUABIOR as a strong candidate for co-leading activities related to feed validation and aquaculture trials or hosting pilot demonstration activities.
Why Topic 1.3.1 fits AQUABIOR:
AQUABIOR’s core expertise in microbial biotechnology and fermentation directly aligns with this call’s focus on on-site transformation of perishable products.
Specifically, AQUABIOR can contribute to:
-Fermentation-based processing of agricultural products (e.g., olives, tomatoes, grapes) to extend shelf life and create high-value products
-Valorization of agri-food residues through microbial conversion into bio-products
-Bioremediation of processing wastewater generated during on-site transformation, ensuring environmental compliance
This positions AQUABIOR as a valuable partner for WP leadership in fermentation and waste valorization or pilot validation activities.
