Fermeta UG is a German agri-biotech startup specialising in the development of postbiotic feed additives for livestock produced through targeted fermentation of biomass. Our fermentation platform is capable of valorising plant-based agri-food by-products and processing residues — including pomace, citrus peel, and other perishable waste streams — into bioactive compounds that improve animal performance and reduce enteric methane emissions. We are partnered with the University in Italy for animal nutrition research and feed trial design, and are seeking additional consortium members to apply to PRIMA’s 2026 Innovation Action calls.

We are forming a consortium to apply to Topic 1.3.1-2026 (IA): Sustainable On-Site Transformation of Perishable Mediterranean Agri-food Products. Our proposed project concept centres on decentralised, renewable-powered fermentation units that upcycle locally abundant perishable plant by-products (e.g., olive pomace, tomato and grape processing residues, citrus peel) into postbiotic feed additives for livestock — retaining added value locally while reducing post-harvest losses and dependence on imported feed inputs.
Our consortium currently includes Fermeta UG (Germany, SME) and a University in Italy. To meet eligibility requirements, we are seeking at least two partners established in Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPCs) — ideally from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Türkiye, Jordan, or Lebanon. Ideal partners would contribute one or more of the following: access to agri-food processing sites or by-product streams for demonstration activities; expertise in food technology, bioprocessing, or renewable energy integration; connections to smallholder cooperatives or rural food value chains; or capacity for LCA and socioeconomic analysis. Partners with existing links to olive oil, viticulture, citrus, or tomato processing industries are particularly welcome.
This application complements our parallel submission to Topic 1.2.1-2026 on alternative animal feeds and methane reduction.
