Oran
We are the Aquaculture and Bioremediation Laboratory (AQUABIOR), a research unit within the Department of Biotechnology at the University of Oran1 Ahmed Ben Bella in Oran, Algeria. Our work is driven by a commitment to sustainable aquatic resource management, merging fundamental and applied research to address pressing environmental and food-production challenges. Our laboratory is structured around three interconnected pillars: Aquaculture innovation – We focus on diversifying and strengthening local aquaculture. A flagship initiative involves adapting cold-water Salmonids, such as Atlantic salmon and Coho salmon, to the Mediterranean environment, aiming to build viable, climate-resilient fish farming systems. Bioremediation – We develop biological solutions for industrial pollution. Our projects target the microbial breakdown of hydrocarbons from used motor oil and the detoxification of harmful byproducts generated by the olive oil industry, turning waste into less hazardous material. Blue biotechnology and microbial ecology – We explore the unique microbial biodiversity of Algeria’s extreme wetlands and marine ecosystems. This includes harnessing microalgae for biofuels and high-value compounds, investigating natural antifouling agents from marine organisms, and prospecting for microorganisms with novel biotechnological potential. The team works under the direction of Prof. Sidi Mohamed Abi Ayad and includes researchers, doctoral students, and technical staff who collaborate across disciplines. Through partnerships with national and international institutions, we aim to transform scientific knowledge into practical tools that protect aquatic ecosystems, support food security, and foster a responsible bioeconomy in the region.

DESCRIPTION

We seek to join a PRIMA consortium as experts in microbial bioprocesses for the bioremediation and biotechnological valorisation of agro-industrial wastes. Our laboratory develops integrated bioconversion cascades that turn polluting waste streams into high-value, marketable products within a circular bioeconomy framework. Our core technological platform includes: Fermentative bioconversion of effluent carbohydrate and organic fractions into bio-based productions (e.g., bioethanol, organic acids) Microbial-based elicitor/stimulant production using plant growth-promoting bacteria, including formulation with biodegradable nanocarriers for controlled delivery Whole-effluent detoxification and life-cycle integration Our current flagship application focuses on olive mill wastewater (OMWW) , but our processes are adaptable to other wastes. We have two ready-to-deploy work packages: Bioethanol generation from fermented effluents PGPR-fermented extracts used as plant elicitors, enhanced via nanoparticle coupling for sustainable crop protection We are interested in integrating into broader projects targeting: Sustainable water/effluent management in Mediterranean farming systems Circular valorisation of food processing by-products Biostimulant and bio-based crop protection solutions Demonstration-scale biorefinery deployment and assessment We bring bench and pilot experience, analytical capacity, and a strong network within the Algerian agro-industrial sector. We are open to adapting our pipelines to the specific waste streams and crops targeted by the consortium, and welcome contact from coordinators or partners.

REMARKS

Our laboratory is embedded within the Department of Biotechnology at the University of Oran1 Ahmed Ben Bella, granting access to microbiology, molecular biology, and bioprocess equipment (fermenters, analytical HPLC, GC-MS, spectrophotometry, and nanoparticle characterisation facilities). We work directly with olive mills in western Algeria, securing real, untreated OMWW streams for experimental and pilot work, which ensures high industrial relevance and facilitates future on-site demonstration. The team has a proven track record of publishing on agro-industrial wastes valorisation, bioethanol production, and microbial enzyme technology, and we are experienced in co-supervising doctoral research with international partners. We hold active collaborations with the Higher School of Biological Sciences of Oran (ESSBO). We are keen to co-design scalable solutions suitable for small and medium-sized Mediterranean agri‑enterprises and can contribute to socioeconomic impact assessment and local stakeholder engagement in Algeria.
