The Higher School of Saharan Agriculture in El Oued is a specialized Algerian institution training engineers in Saharan and arid-zone agriculture. It offers programs in irrigation, plant protection, animal production and Agro-food Technology, combining teaching, research, and innovation to support sustainable development in desert environments.
This project proposes a decentralised, climate-resilient biosaline agriculture system integrating brackish water desalination with two complementary salt-tolerant crops under arid Mediterranean conditions. Aligned with PRIMA priorities, it combines low-cost, energy-efficient desalination and circular water use. The system includes a solar-powered membrane unit producing partially desalinated water, a smart drip irrigation network with salinity-controlled blending, and a circular brine reuse module irrigating salt-adapted vegetation to prevent discharge. One crop targets food production and soil phytodesalination, while the other supports ecological restoration and livestock feed. The system will be piloted in Algeria and Tunisia, improving water efficiency, soil quality, and sustainable agricultural productivity.
