The Water Management Research Institute (WMRI), established in 1975 under Egypt’s National Water Research Center (NWRC), is a leading governmental research institute specializing in irrigation management and sustainable agricultural water use. Building on early water research initiatives dating back to the 1940s, WMRI has played a central role in modernizing irrigation practices in Egypt.
The institute contributed significantly to national programs such as the Irrigation Improvement Project (IIP), supporting the transition from rotational irrigation to demand-driven systems, including continuous flow irrigation and improved water allocation strategies. WMRI also promotes participatory water management involving farmers and stakeholders.
WMRI operates a nationwide network of experimental research stations across the Nile Valley and Delta, representing diverse agro-ecological conditions. These facilities support applied research, field experimentation, and the development of scalable solutions to address water scarcity, climate variability, and agricultural sustainability.

WMRI is seeking collaboration with universities, research institutions, SMEs, and international partners working on water management, irrigation modernization, and climate-resilient agriculture. The institute provides extensive expertise in irrigation efficiency, water allocation, and field-scale implementation supported by multidisciplinary research teams.
WMRI is particularly interested in contributing to projects that address decentralized desalination, non-conventional water resources, ecosystem-based water management, and smart irrigation technologies utilizing ICT and remote sensing tools.
The institute offers well-established experimental research stations distributed across Egypt, serving as real-scale pilot sites for conducting field trials, validating innovative technologies, and testing climate-resilient water management solutions under diverse agro-environmental conditions.
WMRI can contribute to pilot implementation, data collection, modeling, decision-support systems, and policy-relevant research, as well as stakeholder engagement and capacity building.
WMRI has strong experience in international and multidisciplinary research projects and is open to joining consortia as a technical and research partner. The institute provides access to field infrastructure, experimental stations, and diverse pilot areas across Egypt, enabling real-scale validation and demonstration activities.
