MIRRA is a small active organization in the irrigated agriculture sector in Jordan since 2007.
MIRRA’s mission is to work toward the implementation of sustainable development initiatives in Jordan by addressing the challenges facing the water, agricultural, and environmental sectors in order to contribute to water conservation, environmental sustainability, and social and economic prosperity.
Our expertise includes:
Agri-technology transfer, large demonstration fields, irrigation management, farming systems, spatial analysis, life cycle assessment, training and outreach, youth empowerment, engagement with stakeholders and policy makers - Topic 1.1.1-2024 (IA) Sustainability of Mediterranean irrigated agriculture through the implementation of WEFE Nexus approach.
- Topic 1.2.1-2024 (IA) Transformative Adaptation of Mediterranean dry farming systems using water harvesting techniques to address extreme drought in arid and semi-arid environments.
- Topic 1.3.1-2024 (IA) – Developing cost-effective and sustainable technologies adapted to Mediterranean Food Systems to decrease food loss and waste.

We are looking to be an active partner within a consortium. Here is what we can offer:
We own and operate our own farm in the Jordan Valley, where we are able to:
1) Co-design, co-develop and innovate with farmers, students, and transdisciplinary researchers;
2) Pilot, monitor, and evaluate agri-technologies, practices and businesses in a real life ecosystem; and
3) Boost partnership creation, encourage new business development and synergies exploitation. The farm, which includes a training and meeting center is divided into:
1) Tree plots (Grapes and Citrus)
2) Various vegetable plots in open fields
3) Soilless greenhouse currently producing cherry tomatoesWe are also part of a Water User Association (WUA) that includes 150 other farmers growing various types of fruit trees and vegetables, under open field and greenhouses.
-
Challenges that we are facing within our own farming area:
- High irrigation water salinity
- High soil salinity and pH
- Marginal irrigation water quality (treated wastewater mixed with surface water)
- High dependence on chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers
- Weak value chains
- High energy costs
- Lack of access to the grid; use of diesel to pump water
- Great climate unpredictability and extreme hot weather -
We just finished working on a previous prima-funded project: AZMUD ( azmud.eu )
The focus of which was on improving greenhouse agriculture
