Karst aquifers are priceless groundwater systems widespread in the Mediterranean region. Many depend on these groundwater systems for drinking water supply and agricultural irrigation. We -karst hydrogeologists- are responsible for finding the most efficient way to sustain the usage of these groundwater systems in the changing climate. Unfortunately, there are many undiscovered and unprotected karst aquifers throughout the Mediterranean region due to the lack of observation stations. Increasing the quantity and quality of the data in karst aquifers is essential for the development of efficient management plans.
In the present call, we are looking for collaborations (hydrologists, hydrogeologists, structural geologists, geographers, and remote sensing specialists) who can contribute to the following topics:
* Conducting dye tracer tests to reveal the karst aquifer boundaries and groundwater flow routes.
* Using remote sensing tools to estimate the groundwater flow routes.
* Installing discharge measurement stations to estimate the water potential of the karst springs.
* Installing probes for the monitoring of water level and physicochemical parameters (temperature, electrical conductivity, and pH of water) in the karst aquifers.
* Installing probes for the monitoring of soil moisture and physicochemical parameters (temperature, electrical conductivity, and pH of soil water) in the recharge locations of the karst aquifer.
* Development of an integrated Mediterranean-wide real-time monitoring network to build an international database to be used for modeling and prediction against climate and land-use change. If you are interested in the project proposal, please feel free to contact me.
