The native vachellias of Algeria are reputed to be well adapted to life in the Sahara. In addition, vachellias provide good quality fodder, especially in the dry season. They are used in traditional medicine against fever, cough, angina, infections, anemia, diabetes and haemorrhoids. Vachellias, like the majority of legumes, are able to fix nitrogen thanks to their symbiosis with bacteria of the genus Rhizobia, which allows them to enrich the soil with nitrogen. They are species of choice for soil and ecosystem rehabilitation, dune fixation and agroforestry in semi-arid and arid regions. Indeed, they are already included as elite species in the African Great Green Wall project, a plantation project initiated by the countries of the Sahel to combat the progress of desertification. It is with a view to participating in the protection, enhancement and exploitation of these species by optimizing the use of seeds harvested for the production in the nursery of plants intended to be transplanted in situ.
