The Arid Regions Institute (IRA) Medenine (Minister of Agriculture)is mandated to conduct the research needed to develop the agricultural sector, protect and conserve natural resources, and fight against desertification in arid and desert zones. Research activities are carried out in five laboratories.

The research program of the economic and social rural laboratory is devoted mainly to the study of the modes of management and access to natural resources in a dynamic vision that previgorates agricultural, socio-economic and environmental developments and also provide decision-making tools for the implementation of development action based on the integration of the strategies of different groups of actors and their regulatory capacities in arid and desert zones of Tunisia.
