FLOATİNG FİELD
Main global constraints related to climate change, water, land and resource scarcity, and environmental pollution push the food producers to adapt production systems utilizing more by-products, waste recycling and side streams in a limited land area or volume of water. The aquaculture industry is also evolving towards more intensive production systems with consideration of circularity, sustainability and less negative environmental impacts. Biofloc technology (BFT), recirculation aquaculture (RAS), aquaponics and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture methods are examples of this trend. However, there is still more room to improve the productivity and sustainability of the contemporary aquaculture farming systems by integrating with other food production systems such as agriculture, food industry and livestock. For instance, the production efficiency of BFT or aquaponics, recognized as sustainable aquaculture production technologies, can be further increased when integrated with agricultural production as fertilizer or irrigation water and livestock production as drinking water or feed additives. Macro or microalgae cultivation can be made with effluents of RAS applications and the resulting products can be utilized as feedstuff for animals and nutrients in solid sediments can be recycled in the systems to achieve better sustainability of the productions. Moreover, by-products from the food industry can be more efficiently integrated with aquacultural practices both for feed formulation and as a source of nutrients for integrated multitrophic aquaculture and aquaponic. The main core of the project will be the integrations of different technologies and agricultural practices to increase the resilience of food productions systems against the major global constraints.
