Developing nature-based solutions to improve the quality of treated wastewater
The reuse of treated wastewater is very high due to the lack of fresh water resources available in agriculture sector. Despite the opportunities of the reuse of treated municipal wastewater in the agricultural sector worldwide, there are still several limitations and challenges associated with the treated wastewater irrigation such as public health risks caused by many pollutants exist in the wastewater (e.g., pathogens, heavy metals, emerging pollutants). Many countries in Mediterranean (i.e. Jordan, Spain, Tunisia, Israel) are currently reusing treated wastewater in irrigation, consequently, the risk of transport of emerging pollutants to water resources and food chain is very high. For example, in Jordan As-Samra Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is considered the largest wastewater treatment facility. The plant treats annually more than 118 x 106 m3 wastewater and discharges its effluent to the Zarqa River flowing for 40 km distance and which is finally stored into King Talal Dam. The treated wastewater flowing for 40 km at Zarqa river is widely used for irrigation purposes, however it is still polluted water source with high levels of coliforms and emerging pollutants leading to improper conditions for irrigation of edible vegetables. Therefore, there is an urgent need to remove these pollutants from the treated wastewater at Jordan and worldwide. Nature-based solutions (NBS) has recently received significant attention as it can help improve the water supply situation for different domestic uses. the idea of this project is designing and testing different NBS systems at Zarqa river in order to improve the quality of water to be used for unrestricted irrigations: – Constructed wetland (CWs) – Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). – River Bank Filtration (RBF)
