Value Enhancing Green Water Use in Mediterranean Desertification Hotspots
We look for support regarding OBJECTIVE 2C below. In a proposal for Call Section 1, Management of Water 2021, specifically the Topic 1.1.1-2021 (RIA) Sustainable soil and water management for combating land degradation and desertification and promoting ecosystem restoration, as it affects small-scale farmers in the marginal lands of the Mediterranean region. Our prime objective is to unlock the potential of green water resources to de-risk community investment in tree farming systems which are well-adapted to low and variable rainfall and hence are key weapons in the battle against desertification and climate change. We focus on systems tolerant of marginal conditions that represent the best ecological adaptations to change. Our intention is to work with communities in these regions to co-design value-creating, green water-based solutions that combine traditional knowledge with innovative agronomy and investment practices. Objective 1. Quantify risks of, threats to, and potential at the landscape scale for green water solutions. Objective 2A. Explore, co-design, and trial community preferred green water-based solutions at landscape scale through farmer-centric development. Objective 2B. Evaluate the options for improved agronomic management in tree crop systems, organized around green water solutions Objective 2C. Build resilience through the growth of organizational models and social capital. Objective 3. Identify trajectories and business cases to scale green water solutions regionally and beyond the project life cycle
