A consortium made up of two research groups from a German university, a Tunisian and a Spanish research groups, is seeking for companies interested in submitting a project proposal to the PRIMA programme. This proposal corresponds to Topic 2.2.1 (RIA) Up-scaling field practices based on agroecological practices to increase ecosystem services and biodiversity, to adapt the small farming systems to climate change and to increase farmers incomes.
This project intends to evaluate the quinoa potential as a new crop for the Mediterranean environment. The general aim is to obtain different quinoa varieties suitable for being harvested in northern African regions, where salt concentrations are high and water availability is limited.
The participation of the interested companies would be related to (I) the study of the socio-economic impact of the introduction of new varieties of quinoa crops in northern Africa regions, and (II) the development of nutritional products from the African harvested quinoa.
DESCRIPTION OF YOUR ORGANISATION:
BIOVEGEN – Spanish Technology Platform for Plant Biotechnology is a public-private partnership, led by the business sector, which brings together entities from the agrifood sector with an interest in R&D in applied Plant Biology. Our objective is to improve the agrifood sector competitiveness through the incorporation of new technologies based on Plant Biology. To that end, BIOVEGEN coordinates agrifood entities, connecting technological offer & demand and generating business opportunities through public-private collaboration. BIOVEGEN develops collaborations and R&D projects, identifying technological challenges of the sector. The Platform also serves as an interface between science community, business sector and administration. To do so, BIOVEGEN offers a wide range of tools to facilitate R&D activities to its members. Currently, the Platform has 120 members: 102 companies and 18 research centres, as well as the support of the Spanish Ministry of Science & Innovation, which co-finances the initiative. Furthermore, BIOVEGEN is open to partnerships with other entities within the sector.

The Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area will devise new R&I approaches to improve water availability and sustainable agriculture production in a region heavily distressed by climate change, urbanisation and population growth
