Project title: CHAR applied to enhance sustainability of
MEDiterranean small farms (CHARMED)
The CHARMED project has the goal to improve the sustainability of small livestock farms
introducing a new method of local biomass waste valorization
The idea, summarized graphically in the diagram below, sees small farms as the starting and
ending point of a closed and sustainable cycle, providing tools to close local food production
chains. In each case study company, gasification of waste biomass will be used to produce
biochar, thermal energy and electricity. Different independent gasifying small scale units,
widespread distributed within at least 2 rural areas of the mediterraen, will be able to provide
different services and products (also) for local communities such as:
● Heat: district or industrial district heating, heating of process fluids, production of
steam for processing, domestic heating.
● Electricity: they easily connect to the electricity grid and can be implemented within
smart grids, regulating the energy flow towards the territory in which each single
micro unit participates. Besides, they can be used stand-alone.
○ to be used as filter media for GHG emission reduction of livestock farms, in
particolar ammonia volatile compound;
○ to be used as additive for animal feeding in order to improve animal health,
increase nutrient intake efficiency and thus productivity;
○ to be used as an amendment for sustainable agriculture of the future. Also
exploitable in hydroponic farms;
○ Sums up the direct carbon capture and storage with its properties of GHG
retention and abatement (e.g. when used with animals manure, compost
○ COMBI is the result of organic wastes produced directly at the origin of the
production chain or at the end of it (e.g. food wastes), composted with the
addition of biochar as a conditioner for the production of an high quality
compost fertilizer, also capable of increasing the water retention potential of
the soil beside activating a virtuous cycle of carbon capture and storage by the
microorganisms that uses CO2 from the atmosphere for the production of
○ The COMBI is produced starting from lower quality agricultural or animal
waste. Superior quality waste, with a high lignin content, is used as biomass
The project will be able to define the actual concept of “sustainability” as inefficient and
obsolete, having as a final objective, the integration of the biomass production chain into a
new culture of sustainability.
One of the intrinsic objectives of the project is to evaluate the peculiarities of the local
production chains considered as pilot sites. Parallel to the main project, the inclusion of
CHARMED in the area will allow to evaluate the complementarities and consequent
synergies that can be created at the local level to make the most of related production chains.
In this regard, once the pilot projects have been launched, the local food production chains
will be analyzed and, in a broader way, all the local production chains that may present
processing waste in the form of biomass. This operation will also be carried out for all local
production chains that can instead benefit from CHARMED products, intended as electrical,
thermal and bio-char energy to be used for composting (COMBI) or as it is.
The rationale behind the project is precisely to create a situation that gives an alternative to
local production chains for the circularization of production in a virtuous process that tends
towards continuous improvement in terms of sustainability and local resilience.
The Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area will devise new R&I approaches to improve water availability and sustainable agriculture production in a region heavily distressed by climate change, urbanisation and population growth
