Conference on Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus scientific advances in the Mediterranean region
The unpredictability of the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic in many countries may cause serious constraints for travelling in the next few months. We have therefore decided to postpone the WEFE Nexus Science Advances conference to May 2021. We think that this is the best course of action to limit risks to the participants and retain the possibility of a face-to-face high-level dialogue with Mediterranean partners. In the meantime, we will continue working with all of you to prepare for this event.
The current epidemic has highlighted the crucial role of research and innovation, and the need for evidence-based and science-grounded policy-making. Reinforced cooperation between scientists and stakeholders in the WEFE (water, energy, food, ecosystems) sectors will also contribute to the fight against global pandemics such as Covid-19. Food security and agricultural livelihoods, access to safe water and sanitation, reconstruction of the relationship between humans and ecosystems are indeed key elements of social and health protection programmes.
The WEFE Nexus science should be ready to confront the additional challenges that were highlighted by the pandemic and embed them in the discussions prior to the conference. Shifting the event will permit sharing content and ideas through preparatory virtual meetings. We invite all partners to continue their engagement with this conference, whose theme is more important than ever.
The Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area will devise new R&I approaches to improve water availability and sustainable agriculture production in a region heavily distressed by climate change, urbanisation and population growth
