The emerging technologies are very crucial for Tüpraş to achieve a more sustainable and efficient production and operational excellence. Tüpraş also wants to incorporate the technological strength, dedication and motivation of consortium partners and wants to be a part of a collaborative environment. To find a solution for sustainable and green production, building a partnership and enabling technology transfer is an essential step. For this reason, Tüpraş believes that strength and expertise of each partner create a value and carry out the technology one step further.
In addition to laboratory and pilot scale activities, Tüpraş R&D Center in collaboration with four refineries can also provide suitable refinery area in order to demonstrate new technologies, examine the impact of the proposed technology from the refinery point of view and contribute to the commercialization of new technologies. Tüpraş is interested in projects, related to “Integrated Water Resources Management” (IWRM), aiming for Topic 1.1.1-2020 of Water Management area under PRIMA Calls.
Water is a vital component for many industrial processes including the oil & gas industry. Tüpraş, as a refining company, requires high volumes of water for various operations such as injection into hydrocarbon streams for refinement processes, steam generation, and heating/cooling purposes. Regarding the co-processing of water with hydrocarbon streams, many water containing processes generate wastewater. Acknowledging the importance and scarcity of water resources, Tüpraş carries the responsibility for more efficient and sustainable use of water in refinery processes. Tüpraş applies waste water treatment to convert waste water into high quality process water, recycle water and reuse strategies for efficient water use. It has been started to meet water requirements of İzmit Refinery mainly with recycled wastewater instead of fresh water thanks to the urban wastewater recycling investment that was realized. Additionally, the ratio of raw water used for processed crude oil has been reduced by 36% since 2008, thanks to water efficiency and recycling practices that has been launched.
Tüpraş R&D Center is interested in involving in a consortium focusing on new technologies in the scope of emerging water treatment, water management, and process optimization technologies. Thus, the project applications under the call CE-SPIRE-07-2020: Preserving fresh water: recycling industrial waters industry” are made in February, 2020. Tüpraş can be involved in a consortium as an end-user by guiding and testing the developing technology. Tüpraş can contribute to potential project by bringing use case scenarios and help to determine key inputs on the functional specifications and design choices. Thanks to its domain-expertise, Tüpraş can bring wide knowledge in refining operations with the field’s realities and expectations, also can suggest potential requirements for suitable working environments for the technologies. Tüpraş can guide and advise the consortium when it comes to technology testing. Related to target TRLs;
• Tüpraş can provide large scale pilot demonstrations in oil and gas sector.
• Tüpraş can create laboratory scale tests simulating the real environment.
DESCRIPTION OF YOUR ORGANISATION:
Operating four oil refineries with a total of 30 million tons annual crude oil processing capacity, Tüpraş is the first producer in Turkey’s refining sector and largest industrial enterprise of the country with its subsidiary in sea transportation, Ditaş, its subsidiary in railway transportation, KUAŞ (Körfez Ulaştırma A.Ş.) and affiliate in fuel oil distribution sector, Opet. 49% of Tüpraş shares are traded in Istanbul Stock Exchange and 51% is owned by the largest industrial conglomerate of Turkey, Koç Holding.
Tüpraş, Europe's 7th largest refining company, serves as an integrated oil company with both market share and corporate reliability as well as production complexes and partnerships. Tüpraş, which supplies 45 types of petroleum products in Turkey, has direct sales to customers including automotive fuel, LPG, bunker fuel and mineral oil distribution firms licensed by EMRA (Energy Market Regulatory Authority), petrochemical industry, paint industry, General Directorate of Highways, Municipalities, and contractor firms authorized by these agencies and the Turkish Armed Forces. As part of Koç Holding, Tüpraş had an investment-oriented growth and realized investments worth of 6.5 billion dollars in the last 13 years, 6.0 billion dollars of which were allocated to refinery projects.
Tüpraş R&D Center, which is located inside Tüpraş Izmit refinery campus, was established in 2010 as a certified R&D center endorsed by the Ministry of Industry and Technology of Turkey under the law “Supporting Research and Development Activities”. R&D activities for all Tüpraş refineries are coordinated by the R&D center. Tüpraş R&D campus consists of management building, laboratory building and pilot plant facility. Laboratory building includes four laboratories which are dedicated to “Fuel Development”, “Materials Development”, “Catalyst Development & Characterization” and “Product Development” studies. The laboratories host more than 150 lab equipment, including 89 High-Tech Analyzers, which are operated by more than 20 qualified technical staff. More than 180 analysis methods can be applied in the laboratories. Apart from the laboratories, the pilot plant facility of Tüpraş R&D Center hosts 6 pilot plants which can simulate several critical refinery operations in pilot scale, such as refinery distillation unit, fractionator unit and hydroprocessing units.
Tüpraş carries out R&D projects in line with the objectives of enhancing the refinery processes and characteristics of oil products, developing environmentally friendly products and alternative fuel technologies. Tüpraş has been involved as a partner in one FP7 labelled and two EUREKA labelled projects (CITINES, HEROES and ASPHALTGEN), which have been successfully completed. Since 2015, Tüpraş has been involved as a partner in twelve HORIZON2020 projects (SAFEAST, IPERM, INTEGROIL, INDUS3ES, FUDIPO, BIZEOLCAT, BAMBOO, COZMOS, MOF4AIR, FACTLOG, MACBETH & HYDROPTICS), three of which has been successfully completed (SAFEAST, IPERM, INTEGROIL). Tüpraş is also involved in the ITEA-3 labelled project “PIANiSM – Predictive & Prescriptive Automation Smart Manufacturing” which started in 2019.
Tüpraş is involved as a partner in the following H2020 projects, which are in similar scope with this call, as a use-case demonstrator.
INTEGROIL (2016-2019): “Demonstration of a Decision Support System for a Novel Integrated Solution aimed at Water Reuse in the Oil & Gas Industry” (European Commission - H2020 GA n°688989), Partner
The INTEGROIL project aims to develop and demonstrate a robust but flexible integrated solution for treating refinery wastewater flows with variable compositions to different water qualities depending on the final reuse objective. The INTEGROIL solution was designed with different modules each comprising innovative water treatment technologies that will be operated and optimized with a novel Decision Support System. The INTEGROIL approach ensures minimal design and operational efforts involved from the oil and gas end-user side and that the energy and chemical costs are kept to an absolute minimum for a certain target water quality. The technology developed in this project has been tested in Tüpraş Izmit Refinery field and the project has been successfully closed in September, 2019.
HYDROPTICS (2019-2023): “Photonics sensing platform for process optimisation in the oil industry” (European Commission - H2020 GA n°871529), Partner
A set of integrated sensors, making use of advanced photonics subsystems, aimed at optimising the processes of the oil industry will be developed in the project. The device will be validated in real industrial settings, for oil extraction and oil refining processes. The HYDROPTICS platform will perform: 1) oil in water measurements, 2) corrosion inhibitor concentration measurements, 3) oil droplets and suspended solids in water measurements, 4) industrial process optimisation, based on simulation of processes through digital twins, as well as data assimilation from the readings coming from the sensors. The final platform will be tested in both upstream (oil extraction) and downstream (oil processing) industrial processes, in order to validate the sensors, and fine-tune the algorithms that regard process optimisation of said industrial processes.
The Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area will devise new R&I approaches to improve water availability and sustainable agriculture production in a region heavily distressed by climate change, urbanisation and population growth
