water management and smart irrigation systems;
biopesticides (we have developed a biopesticide from local Bt strains and tested on different pests and crops);
composting (we are currently researching the effect of different types of compost on water consumption);
establishment and management of farmers markets;
processing and food transformation;
awareness-raising and training at community and farmers/processors level.
DESCRIPTION OF YOUR ORGANISATION:
Arcenciel is a Lebanese NGO, created in 1985 and managing several programs. The agriculture program, created in 2000, works towards advancing sustainable agriculture practices through several initiatives. Some of these initiatives include crop production, focusing on preserving local varieties and sustainable agricultural practices, compost production as a sustainable solution for solid waste, enhanced by a bacterial inoculum based on local strains of bacteria. We operate in agro-food processing where we empower local farmers and women, reduce food waste in post-harvest and innovate in Lebanese “mouneh”. Moreover, "Beit El Mouzareh", is an ongoing regional agro-market where local farmers and producers can interact directly with customers. Finally, we work in urban agriculture in our HQ center located in Beirut, where we have settled a rooftop garden, that we use to test different prototypes and planting approaches, in addition to being a pilot for others.
